2009, Mr. President? Are you a liar or incompetent?

Donald Rumsfeld, 11/14/02, Press Conference:

I can't tell you if the use of force in Iraq today would last five days, or five weeks, or five months, but it certainly isn't going to last any longer than that.

Dick Cheney, 3/16/03, Face The Nation:

Weeks rather than months

George Bush, 3/21/06, Press Conference:

Q Will there come a day -- and I'm not asking you when, not asking for a timetable -- will there come a day when there will be no more American forces in Iraq?

THE PRESIDENT: That, of course, is an objective, and that will be decided by future Presidents and future governments of Iraq.

Q So it won't happen on your watch?

THE PRESIDENT: You mean a complete withdrawal? That's a timetable. I can only tell you that I will make decisions on force levels based upon what the commanders on the ground say.

So, Mr. President, were Mr. Cheney and Mr. Rumsfeld lying to us in ’02 and ’03 or is your administration so incompetent that 5 months turned into 6 years? My guess is the prior, that they actually believed that they could do this war on the cheap. So, in this case, they aren’t liars. But that doesn’t make them any less culpable, it just makes them incompetent. They still failed their responsibility as leaders of my country.
